Fix You

I believe that God has dispersed pearls of wisdom all across the universe, sometimes even in the most prosaic of places such as a pop song, a poem or a movie. Lately, due to recent life experiences, I have come to realize that there is an important lesson in the song Fix You, by Coldplay, and I would like to share my thoughts on the subject.

Let us start with the story behind the song. One day, the actress Gwyneth Paltrow arrived home drenched in tears because her father had recently passed away. Chris Martin, Coldplay's lead singer, asked her what he could do to assuage her grief. She simply asked him to embrace her, only his company could "fix" her at that point. The very next day he wrote the song Fix You. Today they are married.

There are those you think that love can be expressed merely through pricy gifts or physical forms of affection, but in reality, the greatest display of true love is shown in times of hardship. It might be the loss of a loved one, unemployment, failure at a given task, illness, or any situation where you tried your best, but couldn’t succeed, where you felt so tired, but couldn't sleep. Any situation where, ultimately, you felt stuck in reverse.

If you find yourself alone during one such time of hardship, it is easy to falter and stop believing in love, be it the love of God, as if he had forsaken you, the love of a friend, who simply vanished, or the love of a girlfriend, who abandons you when you need her the most.

So when the tears come streaming down your face, because you've lost something you can't replace. Or when you love someone, but it goes to waste, always remember, there will be a light to guide you home. And if you believe in it, it will fix you.

So due to recent life experiences, I now feel like I grasp the meaning of this song. It is about companionship amidst hard times and the healing power that only true love can provide. When humility is the language of your heart, even the prosaic is sometimes sublime.
